Harassment of U.S. funders and their grantees is increasing and is likely to be an ongoing problem as authoritarians erode America’s democratic norms. Threats come in many forms, including physical, cyber, legal, and political, and they affect a wide range of organizations and leaders, including NGOs, disinformation researchers, and election administrators. The common thread is that harassment makes it harder for these organizations and actors to be effective, as it closes the civic space that is vital to any functioning democracy. In the coming years, we anticipate that these risks will affect both funders and their grantees engaging in pro-democracy work.
Join DFN for a conversation on how funders can begin to understand and mitigate the risks they face in this challenging moment. We will discuss how to conduct a risk assessment and develop a risk management plan. We’ll also look to bigger picture questions for the philanthropic community: how can we shift narratives to deter these attacks? What might philanthropic solidarity mean in this moment? What collective resource might help us and our grantees navigate this landscape?
